Music Curriculum Intent

Intent

The intent of our music curriculum is to make music an enjoyable learning experience through which children can develop their musical tastes, vocabulary, understanding and practical skills. We encourage children to participate in and engage with a wide variety of musical experiences through which we aim to build the confidence of all children. We provide a range of live musical experiences to enhance our children’s cultural capital including opportunities to perform and listen to music both in school and at local theatres.

Implementation

We make music an enjoyable learning experience with singing at the heart of everything we do.  We also teach children to play pitched and unpitched instruments confidently. All children in KS2 learn to play a musical instrument and read basic music.  Our teaching focuses on developing the children’s ability to sing/play in tune and with other people. Through singing songs, children learn about the structure and organisation of music. We also teach them to listen to and appreciate different forms of music.

Impact

Children develop descriptive skills in music lessons when learning about how music can represent feelings and emotions. Children who develop a love of music during lessons can pursue this through a range of peripatetic teachers available in school.  Children also learn to recognise musical dynamics and perform for an audience: this is evident in school productions, federation concerts and class assemblies.
