Eco Schools

At Irby Primary School we are very passionate about empowering children to improve the environment we live in. We aim to develop the skills of our children, improve the school environment and raise environmental awareness. Each class has two Eco Warriors who represent their class on the Eco Committee. We have ten topics to choose from and work on 5 of them over a two year period. These topics are:

  • Energy

  • Litter

  • Waste

  • Transport

  • Marine

  • School grounds

  • Water

  • Biodiversity

  • Healthy living

  • Global Citizenship

This year we are extremely proud of our achievements. We have focused on SUP ( single use plastic) and reduced the use of SUP in school hugely. The biggest change we have made is to change the way the children have milk and as a result we have stopped 41,360 pieces of SUP going to landfill per year. We have also changed our plastic book bags for fabric ones, and have provided each child with a reusable water bottle. Another change we have made is to go plastic bag free and the children are discouraged from bringing plastic bags into school.

Another big change we have made is to have solar panels fitted to the school roof, another achievement we are very proud of.

We were very pleased to achieve Green Flag status again this year and are looking forward to new challenges as a committee this year.
